Review of NQ Academy Webinar #4: Geochemical Signatures over Volcanic Geothermal Systems

NQ News, Wednesday, December 23, 2020

NQ Academy Webinar #4 was held on December 19, 2020. This webinar entitled “Geochemical Signatures over Volcanic Geothermal Systems” which was delivered by Dr. Zainal Abidin, and hosted by Dr. Yunus Daud. The webinar is well conducted with number of participant is about 200 persons.

The webinar has discussed clearly how to define whether a geothermal area is associated with volcanism or not based on geochemical data analysis. In his beginning presentation. Dr. Zainal Abidin divides magmatic levels into several categories, namely critical, non-critical or non-magmatic. It must be observed carefully and using the right methodology.

Dr. Zainal Abidin has explained the process of geothermal fluid genesis, from neutralization process of the magmatic gases, water-rock interactions, mixing process, as well as genesis of several types of surface manifestation.

There are several methods that could be used to assess magmatic level of a geothermal system. The methods are complete gas analysis, Sulfur isotope analysis, Helium isotope analysis, water isotope analysis, Carbon isotope as well as concentration of volcanic gases (HCl, HF, SO2) which appear in water and fumarole.

The webinar has discussed several case studies, such as Sorik Marapi, Tangkuban Parahu and Telaga Bodas. In several case studies, ternary diagrams are compared with data on Mount Slamet and Mount Merapi which are super critical magmatic gas.

The questions and answers session was a very interesting session with the topic Geochemical Signatures over Volcanic Geothermal Systems. Participants are very enthusiastic about being able to find out whether a geothermal area can be declared as magmatic system or not, the tolerance of magmatic content which is still safe, possibility to determine scaling proble from the initial survey , as well as magmatism reactivation.

At the end of the Webinar, the host delivers a summary. In determining whether a geothermal system is a magmatic or not, we must be careful and detailed in a complete gas analysis in order to obtain information about clear boundaries to define. Especially in Indonesia's geothermal fields, we can determine which fields can be developed or not from the integration of several assessment methods in geochemistry as well as other data from geology and geophysics.
