NewQuest Geotechnology (NQ-Indonesia) in collaboration with The Centre for IMT-GT Subregional Cooperation (CIMT) and IMT-GT Working Group on Environment (WGE) will held a webinar entitled Promoting Sustainable Energy in the Subregion: Exploration & Utilisation of Low-Medium Geothermal Resources for GHG Reduction on 28 April 2021.

Low to Medium temperature geothermal resources in ASEAN, spreads not only in Indonesia and the Philippines, but in almost all ASEAN countries.

In Malaysia, according ERIA - Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia research 2017, there are around 273 MW geothermal potential that can be developed from 3 locations: Ulu Slim (Perak) has potential of 148 MW, Apas Kiri (Tawau) has potential of 85 MW, and Segaria - Sungai Jipun - Gunung Pock (Kunak) has potential of 40 MW. One exploration well has been drilled in Tawau prospect but the project is halt until now. There are also several geothermal prospects need to be detailed survey such as Lojing (Kelantan), Ulu Langat and Batang Kali (Selangor), and Sungai Denak (Perak).

In Thailand, according to a study by Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency in 2006, 112 hot brine sources are found in regions of Thailand except in the northeastern part. Water temperatures on the surface level ranged from 40°C to 100°C. The current power production from geothermal energy is 0.3 MW from binary cycle power plant in Fang geothermal field.

In Indonesia, Geothermal exploration activities began a century ago in 1920 and operated first geothermal power plant PLTP Kamojang-1 with a capacity of 30 MW in 1983. Now Indonesia's geothermal installed capacity is 2.13 GW, ranked second in the world after USA. After completed surveys in all high temperature locations, exploration activities have continued to medium temperature geothermal spread over 167 locations start in the last few years.

This webinar is intended to share countries activities and experiences, information exchange on Low-Medium Geothermal Exploration with expected outcome developing Low-Medium geothermal resources in Regional ASEAN, particularly in IMG-GT member countries.

This webinar will present speakers from: all IMT-GT countries, ASEAN Secretariat (ASEAN Center of Energy), University of Malaya, NewQuest Geotechnology, and ICLEI India.

The Indonesia–Malaysia–Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) started as an early attempt at economic liberalization & integration in ASEAN. It was formally endorsed by Indonesia’s President Soeharto, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammad, and Thailand’s Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai in 1993. (Wikipedia).

Webinar Date: 28 April 2021 (Wednesday), 09.00 AM (Jakarta)
